“Bernie and I have been talking to Johnny’s people,” her dad said the morning after she arrived back in Nashville. She was still in bed, but her dad had set up a conference call. “Bernie’s here, and Lesley, and Johnny’s manager, Beau. I want you to listen, but you are not to speak. Understood?”

Elle nodded. She didn’t like to be told when she could and couldn’t speak. But she also didn’t want to talk about what had happened. She was happy to listen. This time.

“The immediate issue is the Los Angeles show at the Staples Center in three days. Probably the biggest show of the tour,” Bernie piped in.

“It’s not lost on us that this kind of publicity is a very good opportunity to bring out the press.” Bernie could spin anything, even this latest disaster. “Listen, there’s gonna be a feeding frenzy about Elle, but hey, even bad press is press,” he continued. “There’s blood in the water, and the media sharks are circling. It’s make-or-break time.”

“Can I say something, gentlemen?” Lesley, the tour publicist, said.

“Yes, please,” said Beau, a soft-spoken man who was well respected in the music business.

“Do you know what the media loves more than anything?” Lesley said. “What the people love more than anything? A comeback story! We just need to create a story about the difficulty Elle has faced, her personal struggle. If we spin it that way, everyone will love it.”

The men all agreed, and Bernie said, “While you’re working on that, maybe we should get her into one of those LA vocal coaches. Get her whipped into shape in no time. I hear they can do miracles!”

“Great idea, Bernie!” her father said.

“I know someone in LA that could get us in with Louis Lamont, vocal guru to the stars,” Bernie said. “If you guys can get her on a plane to Los Angeles first thing in the morning, I’ll get her in with Louis tomorrow afternoon. Maybe have a second session the following morning. She’ll be ready for the Staples show.”

Everyone agreed to that plan of action. Elle didn’t say a word.
